Eclipse Company Store

The Adventure...

Built by the Hocking Valley Coal Company in 1902, the Eclipse Company Town sits atop Eclipse Mine #4. Miners and their families once lived in the quaint houses and shopped at the company general store. Based on the amount of coal a worker was able to mine, the miners were paid with credit or scrip. The credit or scrip could be exchanged for goods and services at the company store. The Eclipse Mine closed in the early 1930s. The mine reopened for a short time between 1940 and 1948 as part of the World War II effort. In 1997, Eclipse, Ltd. was formed by five friends who decided to take on restoration of the company town. Today, the town has twelve company houses, one shotgun house, and the company store. The houses are rented to an array of commercial and residential tenants.

A scenic bike ride or walk along the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway is, in our opinion, the best way to reach this destination. While you are there get a bite to eat at Jana's Soul Food Café or Zoe Fine Dining. Or catch on of the numerous festivals and events, such as the Appalachian Spring Festival and Tour de ForestBenefit Bicycle Tour, that are held at Eclipse throughout the year.
