Tar Hollow State Forest

Characterized by deep narrow valleys and dense woodlands, Tar Hollow State Forest is a 16,354-acre park that spans Vinton, Ross, and Hocking Counties. Shortleaf and pitch pines grow along the ridge tops that were once a source of pine tar for early settlers, hence the name Tar Hollow. Offering several outdoor adventures, this park is a popular destination. Twenty-two miles of hiking trails, including the Ross Hollow Trail and the Buckeye Trail, traverse the park. There are also 21 miles of backpacking trails, 25 miles of bridle trails, and 2.5 miles of mountain biking trails. Swimming, boating, and fishing are popular activities in and along the 15-acre Pine Lake. A variety of scenic drives are Wooded campsites are available along the lake. Seventy-one of these sites are equipped with electrical hookups, 11 are non-electric, and 12 are more primitive and secluded walk-in sites. Five primitive sites are located along the backpack trail. Bike and boat rentals and other items are available at the park's general store.

Getting there is Half the Adventure!
Tar Hollow State Park is located along the Vinton, Ross, and Hocking County borders just west of Eagles Mills. Several roads leading into the park can be accessed from State Route 327.
